The Oscars
are the culmination of a solid two month award season and of course the
best thing about them is arguably always the red carpet.
Actors
and actresses alike take to the Hollywood boulevard in the most
glamorous couture creations that will always guarantee a jaw drop or
two.
This infographic by Big Group, updated with the 2014 gown
from Cate Blanchett after her Best Actress win, showcases the beautiful
gowns worn by the winners since 1929. Oscar Dresses
The 70 dresses feature some of the most prestigious designers
in the world with several standouts from recent memory such as Halle
Berry's Elie Saab creation, Hilary Swank's backless navy blue Guy
Laroche, Julia Roberts monochrome Valentino and Gwyneth Paltrow's pink
Ralph Lauren.
Of course Cher's ridiculously wacky costume can't
be missed off as well as Elizabeth Taylor and the more demure likes of
Audrey Hepburn and Gracy Kelly. Oscars dresses throughout the years
As The Oscars approach it's a stressful time for stylists and their clients as they come to the big decision of what to wear.
With
fingers crossed they don't pull a last-minute switch a la Anne Hathaway
and appear regal and beautiful like Lupita Nyong'o last year, stars
across the board will be hoping to march on to all the best dressed
lists.
Here we take a look at the 10 best dresses at The Oscars over the years:
Audrey Hepburn in Edith Head/Givenchy (1954)
In what could be described as classic Audrey Hepburn style,
the actress picked up her award in a white ankle length dress nipped in
at the waist with a high neck.
Grace Kelly in Edith Head/Givenchy (1955)
WENN
Perhaps following in the style of her peer, Grace Kelly
sported the same designer as Audrey choosing a mint green floor-length
confection with a bustle at the back.
Elizabeth Taylor in Christian Dior (1961)
The flawless queen of Old Hollywood, Elizabeth Taylor chose a
Christian Dior ankle length dress featuring a lemon yellow top, a
rose-belted waist and a floral ball-gown skirt.
Cher in Bob Mackie (1986)
For the Oscars this was actual craziness. Cher rocked up in
what could only possibly described as a peacock on her head revealing
tons of flesh in her see-through custom costume.
Gwyneth Paltrow in Ralph Lauren (1999)
We all remember Gwyneth Paltrow's
Barbie pink Ralph Lauren gown and her blubbery speech when she received
her reward. What stood out about this dress was the thin spaghetti
straps and that slicked back do that showcased those jewels.
Julia Roberts in Valentino (2001)
Sporting vintage Valentino for her 2001 win for Erin Brokovich, Julia Roberts
looked like she belonged in the 1940s with her classic chignon and
monochrome column dress. Definitely one of the most iconic Oscars dress
ever.
Halle Berry in Elie Saab (2002)
Another iconic dress that will be forever associated with Halle Berry.
Very risque for the prestigious awards, but if you're going big you may
as well be remembered for this beautiful Elie Saab creation for which
Halle picked up the first ever Best Actress award won by a black
actress.
Hilary Swank in Guy Laroche (2005)
It was all party in the back for Hilary Swank in her navy Guy
Laroche gown when she won her second Best Actress award for Millioin
Dollar Baby.
Marion Cotillard in Jean Paul Gaultier (2008)
A firm favourite in recent Oscars history, Marion Cotillard's
mermaid-inspired gown by Jean Paul Gaultier is a shining example of
exquisite craftmanship.
Jennifer Lawrence in Christian Dior (2013)
Who could possibly forget Jennifer Lawrence
in her blush pink voluminous Christian Dior gown in 2013. The designer
was picked early on due to her brand spanking new contract with the
brand but it was all down to exactly which dress she would wear and this
jaw-dropping creation won hands down.
