Last week the teen pin-up announced he was leaving the band to live the life of a 'normal 22-year-old'.
According to a report, Zayn first broke the news he wanted out to band mate Harry Styles in a tearful 2am phone call the day before his statement was released.
"They were both in floods of tears," a band insider told Reveal magazine.
"Harry was hoping to talk round and get him back on the tour. He had no idea he was going to drop the bombshell and say he was leaving."
They added: "Zayn said, 'It's my life with Perrie or my life with the band. I can't do both. I can't go on.'"
Mirror Celebs contacted a spokesperson for Zayn who declined to comment.
While Harry has remained fairly silent on Twitter following the news, Liam shared an emotional lengthy statement.
He wrote: "For the past five years now I've been part of something so special I don't think any of us really understand, something that can mean the world to people and put a smile on the face of our fans even in the darkest times.
"To a lot of people it's just a bunch of silly kids in a band but to the people involved it means so much more. This last week has been some of the worst times, possibly the worst it's something we are all deeply saddened by.
"It's sad to think for the time being we won't grace the stage as five bros or have the same fun on a tour bus or laughs in a hotel together that we have over the years but I'm super sure us and zayn will always remain the closest friends (sic)."
Liam insisted this doesn't mean the end of the band, and revealed all members agreed the group is "much bigger than each individual member".
He continued: "I guess what I'm really trying to say is it's far from over.
"When we very 1st became successful we all agreed that one direction had become much bigger than each individual member that's why I feel like right now it's ok to be sad and upset but I do ask everyone who is a fan of us to please keep ur faith in us I'm sure there's a lot more to come (sic)."
Meanwhile, Zayn's first solo demo has been released. The fandom went crazy last night when producer Naughty Boy tweeted out a link to the track I Won't Mind on Soundcloud and it's already had more than a million hits.
Directioners have branded their collaboration, 'Zaughty', and praised the pop star's new sound, which is completely different to the Midnight Memories group.
"Let the music do the talking guys," Naughty Boy wrote on Twitter. "Thank us later."
