Leading internet services, including Twitter, Dyn and Spotify, suffered outages on Friday as an internet provider in the United States came under cyber attack.
AFP gathered that the outages, which affected mostly the east coast of the US, have now been resolved – about some hours ago.
New Hampshire-based internet service company, Dyn said that it had suffered a denial of service (DDoS) attack on its domain name service shortly after 1100 GMT, but that services had been restored in about two hours.
“This morning, October 21, Dyn received a global DDoS attack on our Managed DNS infrastructure in the east coast of the United States,” said Scott Hilton, executive vice president for products at Dyn, in a statement.
“DNS traffic resolved from east coast name server locations are experiencing a service degradation or intermittent interruption during this time,” Hilton added.
“We have been aggressively mitigating the DDoS attack against our infrastructure.”
Other affected sites, which serve millions of customers, reportedly included the crafts marketplace Etsy and the software developer site Github, according to the website Hacker News.
Quite a number of netizens in the United States had trouble accessing sites including Twitter and Vox, but others found the sites accessible in Europe or via mobile phones.
Other sites experiencing issues included Github, Airbnb, Reddit, Netflix and Amazon.
Amazon, whose web service AWS hosts many of the web’s popular destinations including Netflix, also reported East Coast issues around the same time. In an update posted at 9:36AM ET it said that it had “been resolved and the service is operating normally.”
Amazon noted that it was suffering from a “hostname” issue and it was not immediately clear if it was related to the DDoS attack Dyn received.
