She was annoyed about money, so she ended the dispute with limo driver James Sheaffer
In a call to the police pleading for help, Angela Stoldt’s sister asked emergency services to come and collect mother-of-two Angela – for her own safety.
She hadn’t been sleeping, she was distraught, hugging her children goodbye and acting suicidal. She’d also just made a shocking confession.
"She came to the house and told my parents that she committed a crime…" Angela’s sister explained. It sounded like she was a criminal tormented with remorse, but when it was revealed what she had done, investigators were horrified.
Her weapon of choice was an ice pick, the location for the murder was a cemetery, and she disposed of the body by cooking it. There was nothing angelic about Angela.
Boiled on the stove
Limo driver James Sheaffer, 36, was a married dad-of-three. He lived in Deltona, Florida, across the street from Angela, 42, and they had a complex relationship that centred on money.
For an unexplained reason, Angela was in charge of James’ disability benefits allowance, but he kept overdrawing from a joint account they’d set up.
They were just friends, but when James also asked divorcĂ©e Angela to borrow $4,000 (£2,500) from her dad, it had angered her.
On April 3, 2013, Angela and James were drinking vodka and cocktails at her home. Angela drugged James’ drink and drove him to a local cemetery. There she killed James by stabbing him in the face with an ice pick, then strangling him with a cord.
Back at home, she used a knife and a hacksaw to slice up his body in a kid’s paddling pool. Angela needed to get rid of the dismembered body, so put parts of James in pots and fired up the oven. Some bits went inside the oven, others bubbled on the stove.
When the stench of cooking flesh was too much, Angela stuffed the body parts in rubbish bags and roped in her teenage son to help her scatter them near their home in Deltona – she told him she’d hit a deer with her car and needed to get rid of it. When Angela’s daughter commented on the foul smell in the house, she made up a story about a rat getting caught in the oven.
Meanwhile, the police started to investigate James’s disappearance. When routinely asked, Angela admitted they were friends, and she’d helped him with his financial affairs. All the while, she was burying his mobile and throwing her cooking pots in bins around the area.
It took three weeks before Angela confessed to her family what she’d done, but insisted it was self-defence. Angela’s sister called 911, fearing she was unstable and could harm herself.
When questioned by police, Angela confessed and was matter of fact about disposing of the body. "Thursday is when I was cooking him. Friday is when I was dumping him," she recalled.
She said James was going to ruin her life. "I’m sorry, but I put Jimmy where he belonged, in my opinion at the time," she told police. "He starts coming at me, and he didn’t even really hit me, but he scared me and I just snapped. He came at me and I stabbed him."
Angela lead police to where she’d dumped the remains, but out of 206 bones, only 56 were recovered – his head and torso were never found. She was charged and refused bail.
At the trial in September 2013, Angela’s defence claimed she’d killed James in self-defence after he attacked her in her car. She said he’d been making threats to kill her and her children.
But the prosecution said it was a calculated, premeditated murder. While they were drinking together, Angela had spiked James’s drink with prescription medication, a muscle relaxer that she’d stolen from her dad.
She then drove him to Osteen Cemetery in Deltona, dropping off her kids with family on the way. There, she parked up and stabbed him in one eye with an ice pick, then choked him with a cord. When James was dead, she stabbed him in the other eye.
Behind bars
The prosecution said Angela wrapped his head in plastic so he didn’t bleed all over her car. Jimmy was propped up in the passenger seat with the ice pick sticking out of his face as Angela drove h
