A three-year-old boy shot both his parents in a freak accident after rummaging through his mum's handbag and pulling out a loaded handgun.
The toddler fired one shot, which struck his father, Justin Reynolds, in the right buttock.
The bullet then travelled out of his hip and hit the arm of his mum, Gabrielle Burkhart, who is eight months pregnant, it has been reported.
The family, which also includes a two-year-old girl, were living at America’s Best Value Inn in Albuquerque, New Mexico, where the shooting happened in their motel room.
The parents were taken to hospital with gunshot wounds but will survive their injuries, Albuquerque Police Department officer Simon Drobik told the Albuquerque Journal.
Police said the mum appeared seriously injured and remained in a hospital Saturday night. The dad has since been released from hospital.
The two children won’t be interviewed until a later date because of their age.
The shooting took place around 2pm on Saturday in a second floor room of the motel at 2018 Menaul NE as the family were getting ready to order a pizza.
The Daily Mail reports that shocked father Mr Reynolds said it all happened so quickly.
He said: "All of a sudden we heard a gun go off.
"The next minute I realized my girlfriend was bleeding. Then I sat down and realized I was shot too. I was more worried about my girlfriend than myself and anything else that was going on.
"And my son because I didn't know if he had shot himself or not. He was shocked and crying," he said.
The state Children, Youth and Families Department took custody of the children for at least 48 hours, Mr Drobik said.
The case has been sent to Albuquerque District Attorney's Office, which will determine whether the parents will be charged with criminal negligence.
“If you are going to be a gun owner, you need to lock it up and keep it safe, especially around children,” Mr Drobik told the Journal.
Albuquerque in New Mexico is the setting of the hit US television series Breaking Bad.
