MUST READ: These are what sleeping with make up do to you!

Falling asleep without so much as a cursory face-wipe is something many of us have been guilty of.

Whether it was the result of a very late, rather messy night or you simply just fell asleep, it's practically a rite of passage.

As for any repeat offenders out there though - sleeping with your make-up still on is bad news for not just your skin, but also your eyesight and how you 'age'.

There's a lot of advice and information circulated about healthy and beauty, some of which can seem fleeting and even conflicting.

But according to Bustle , if there's one ritual you should make time for, it's taking off the day's make-up. And these reasons why will make you a convert to nightly soap and water.

1. Sleeping in your make-up can block your hair follicles

Trust us, your skin will thank you

By regularly falling asleep in your eye make-up (or not taking it off properly) you run the risk of blocking the hair follicles and oil glands on your eyelid.

Dr Schweiger told the Huffington Post , "when these areas become clogged, the bacteria can build up and cause inflammation.

"As a result, small bumps called styes or hordeolums can form. These bumps may resolve spontaneously, but many require treatment from your doctor."

Also - think of your lovely bedding getting mucky!
2. It can lead to wrinkles

Ageing is an inevitable process. But you probably want to avoid the factors which speed it up as much as possible.

Going to bed without washing your face, or again, not doing a very thorough job is one such factor because of all the oxidative stress which our skin has to deal with during the day.

Protect your skin by ensuring your remove all traces of free radicals from your day

As Dr Schweiger explains: "Free radicals from the environment (often in the form of pollution) remain on the skin when you do not clean your face properly at night.

"Free radicals cause collagen breakdown over time, which results in the development of fine lines and prematurely aged skin."

3. And cysts

Repeatedly leaving your eye make-up on can have unpleasant effects which go beyond styes. It can even cause cysts.

4. Then there's blackheads, spots, dullness and possible acne

We spend so much of our lives trying to banish problem skin and break-outs. But a lack of nightly regime might be undoing all of our good work.

Problem skin can be aggravated by not washing your face properly every night

The accumulative effect, says Dr Schweiger, of sleeping in your make-up causes the pores to clog, and which "can result in the formation of microcomedone , which attracts the acne-causing bacteria to your pores."

Aldo, beware of not taking off (especially) foundation and oil-based primers. "They prevent the skin from renewing itself naturally at night, causing blackheads, acne and dullness."

And also

It's not just our skin which can suffer.

Your eyelashes will get weaker and thinner over time if you don't take your mascara off

Eyelashes can become dried out, thinner and more brittle over time if mascara isn't removed properly.

The same applies to the skin on our lips if we don't take care to wipe off our lipstick - there are chemicals contained which cause all moisture to evaporate, leaving us with chapped, scaly lips come morning.
