PDP crisis deepens as Sheriff cancels convention and members appoint new chairman

The crisis rocking the Peoples Democratic Party took another dimension in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, on Saturday afternoon as its National Chairman, Sen. Ali Modu Sheriff, unilaterally cancelled the national convention of the party in the state.

Sheriff, at a hurriedly held press briefing, said he was doing so because of many court cases involving the party.

He was surrounded at the briefing by few members of the party.

However, no governor or any of the members of the National Working Committee was at the briefing.

It got more twisted when governors in the Peoples Democratic Party decided to ignore the announcement by the National Chairman of the party, Sen. Ali Modu Sheriff, that its national convention has been cancelled.

A governor said that a former Governor of Kaduna, Sen. Ahmed Makarfi as the party’s caretaker national chairman and that they are going ahead with the convention.

He added that Senator Ben Obi was named the national secretary of the party.

A faction of the party led by a former Minister of Information, Prof. Jerry Gana, had earlier held its briefing in Abuja.
